納涼盆おどり Nōryō bon'odori
It is believed that during this Japanese Buddhist Festival period, the ancestor's spirits come to visit their relatives. Paper lanterns are hung in front of the houses to guide the spirits. Between the 13th and 15th of August, you can observe the dance at 湯澤神社境内 Yuzawa Shrine grounds from 8pm onwards -
Now that it’s light at 4:30am, we go for long early morning walks in the near-silence of the beech forest. One of the weirdest things we see each year are the “silver dragonfly grasses”: translucent white ghostlike plants with no chlorophyll, that can’t photosynthesise. Not needing sunlight, they lurk in the dark corners of the forest floor, and get their nutrients from underground fungal networks… and this year they’re out in force!
