【特別な思いのある戦跡】
ハノイの街で不思議に思うのは北爆を受けながらフランス統治下のコロニアル建築や整然とした美しい街路樹が随所に残っていることです。
昨日はバラク・オバマと大統領選を争ったジョン・マケインが1967年10月に乗っていたA-4が撃墜され、捕虜として5年半を過ごしたハノイ・ヒルトンことホアロー捕虜収容所を見ました。近くにはマケインの攻撃機を撃墜したS-75地対空ミサイル、撃墜されたB52の残骸が湖面に残る湖などがあります。観光スポットには興味がわかないのですがベトナム戦争は記憶にある生きた現代史なので戦跡に対しては特別な思いがあります。

昔ほど旅に出たいと思わなくなりました。飛行機による長時間の移動や空港での待ち時間を考えると、むしろ行きたくないと考えていました。しかし、ハノイに来て5日を過ごしてみると、その考えが変わります。旧市街とその周辺部の街並みはフレンチコロニアルの魅力にあふれ、けたたましいクラクションとともに縦横無尽に突っ込んで来るバイクと車を避けながら、圧縮陳列のような商店街を歩くと脳が活性化されます。絶え間ない新鮮な刺激を受けることで身体が若返る感覚です。日本から近く、治安も気候もよく、食べ物が美味しく、買いたくなるものが多いハノイの街には、時々充電に来たいと思います。
早朝のカフェでは起業家らしき若者がアイフォンでテレビ会議をしていました。

海外でホテルに泊まるとホテルの未来を考えます。産業化の過程でステレオタイプが行きすぎた結果、ホテルの商品計画と現代の市場が求めるものとの間に乖離ができたと思います。ライフスタイルホテルなど新手の商品は開発されますが、ホテルの文脈からは自由になれません。他方で民泊やゲストハウス側は洗練の道具としてホテルのエッセンスを使おうとします。異なる両者の業際に新たな商品カテゴリーが生まれる気がします。つまるところ旅行者が感じる旅の本質は何かという命題に対して商品を切り開く力が求められると思います。

ハノイに来て2日を過ごしましたが、ぼくの知る限りアジアでもっとも魅力的な街だと思います。路線バスは35円、食事は150円といった感じで生活費が安く、ホテルも変に高級なところに泊まらなければ4,000円から6,000円です。露天で食べる食事はどれも美味しく、この価格帯で泊まれるホテルとしては洗練され先端的な施設が集積しています。
巨大な街なのに街並みが美しく、至るところにフランス統治下の風情が残ります。連日2万歩以上歩いても地形が頭に入らないのは、道が微妙な角度で交差したり曲がっていて、あたかも街中がドンキホーテの店内のように猥雑だからだと思います。

ハノイは先端的で豊かな生活とベトナム戦争当時と変わらない貧しい暮らしが混在する不思議な街です。中心街は働く人たちの生きる活力に満ち溢れています。海外に出ると人々の生命の息吹に触れる新鮮さや、格差の少ない日本の良さを感じます。ことホテルに関しては日本がいつか通ってきた道をアジアの発展途上国は通らずに進化していて、あたかも日本が周回遅れになった印象があります。
